COBOL Migration Manager (CMM)
In the late 1950’s, computer users and manufacturers were concerned about the rising cost of application development. Programs had to be rewritten any time new hardware was brought in; at that time, application migration costs were nearly ¾ of new program development costs. Businesses wanted a common programming language that would be portable from one piece of hardware to another, and thus, COBOL was born in 1959.
Ever since then, COBOL programs have been an integral part of data processing around the world. Applications are written, updated, and retired – but almost never deleted. This digital hoarding is not usually a problem for a majority of companies; the most widely-used version of Enterprise COBOL for z/OS was released in 2009 and still fully supported by IBM late into the 2010’s. Things seemed like they would continue this way until IBM announced in February 2019 that COBOL 4.2 would reach end of support in April 2022. With only three years to migrate all of their code up two major versions, companies were left with a simple, yet difficult question – which programs do they actually use?
Enterprise COBOL 6 introduces a new wrinkle in the migration process. In previous versions of COBOL, if your program has ‘invalid COBOL data’ it will still run to completion. With COBOL 6, it will fail. IBM recommends extensive testing to ensure that these data issues will not cause problems. This new requirement makes it even more important to have a comprehensive inventory of your COBOL programs and extensive testing prior to migration. Without that information, a painful migration process can become excruciating.
COBOL Migration Manager (CMM), is a game-changing software solution from DTS Software, and is the only known product of its kind in the industry. CMM offers a critical and valuable solution for companies planning a COBOL migration. When installed and used during the early migration planning and preparation stages, CMM will allow companies and users to avoid many of the issues that arise during COBOL migrations due to incomplete knowledge of modules in an environment. CMM offers a new approach to mainframe application modernization with:
- Data-driven insights to prioritize COBOL migration, saving countless hours of manual work.
- Preservation of valuable recompiling resources that gives users a snapshot of what programs are in production.
- Integration with current reporting solutions provides a dashboard view that enables organizations to include COBOL modernization with other initiatives.
- Ease of installation with no SMP/E work required.
COBOL Migration Manager (CMM), a game-changing software solution from DTS, is the only known product of its kind in the industry. As z/OS evolves and older COBOL versions become obsolete, CMM offers a new approach to mainframe application modernization. The solution provides data-driven insights to help prioritize COBOL migration, saving countless hours of manual work. CMM preserves valuable recompiling resources by giving users a snapshot of what programs are in production. Integration with current reporting solutions provides a dashboard view that enables organizations to include COBOL modernization with other initiatives.
CMM can help you understand what modules are active in your environment by creating an inventory of COBOL modules. This is important because if you lack knowledge about the existing modules in your environment, your COBOL migration may inadvertently take an unpredictable course, relying on random choices or individuals’ perceptions regarding what is in use. With this approach, you are not guaranteed to find all the modules that need to be migrated. CMM can help you identify all modules, and provide details regarding how frequently they are run which will help you prioritize migration based on factors that you identify. When you can identify those programs that are run most frequently, you can prioritize the migration. However, keep in mind that programs run monthly, quarterly, or annually are just as important. CMM requires time to capture these program executions, so it’s important to plan accordingly and install CMM ahead of migration to provide an accurate picture of modules in your environment.
CMM’s robust data dictionary supports a flexible and customizable reporting solution to meet your needs. You are able to select fields and filter the data to see just what you prefer. CMM can give a highly accurate and detailed reflection of COBOL modules in an environment at any point in time. CMM includes two standard reports which will solve most use cases, but we recognize that organizations have their own reporting goals and allow for customization of reports.
Create a detailed inventory of your COBOL modules.
- Gain knowledge of all existing modules in your environment and identify all the modules that need to be migrated (and ones that don’t).
- Understand what modules are active in your environment by creating an inventory of COBOL modules and provide details regarding how frequently they are run to help prioritize migration.
Flexible & customizable reporting solution
- CMM’s robust data dictionary supports a flexible and customizable reporting solution to meet your needs.
- CMM can give a highly accurate and detailed reflection of COBOL modules in an environment at any point in time.
- Two standard reports are included which will solve most use cases, but reports are highly customizable to align with organizational reporting needs.
Ease of Installation and Use
- The DIF started task manages product startup, refresh, and shutdown via simple commands, and all code is dynamically installed – no SMP/E work is required.
- COBOL libraries are identified by the user via JCL. CMM then creates the inventory from the specified libraries. Additional libraries can be subsequently added as identified by the customer.
